1. Problem Definition
Starting in 2027, every product sold in the EU must include a Digital Product Passport. The European Commission has identified priority industries: Batteries, Textiles, Electronics, Plastics, Construction, Buildings, Furniture, and Chemicals. The application must be scalable and developed in a short time frame. The key product challenge is delivering a solution that complies with various industries while remaining flexible for future growth.
2. Two–Step Design Process
To achieve the best results in the short term, I divided the design work into several phases. The first phase focuses on building the core, allowing the development team to implement the solution in the shortest time. The second phase focuses on headless branding. For the first phase, the goals are to convert user stories into a user journey map, which will then be translated into design mockups using the Tailwind design and code library for rapid production.
3. Headless Brand and Visual Landguage
It is crucial that the application’s styles and content can be customized as easily as possible. To achieve this, I conducted research on industry state-of-the-art applications and best practices for implementing headless design principles. Together with the development team, we defined a token-based design approach to enable smooth visual customizations.
4. Pilot Test
The pilot test was completed with BLK DNM, an entry-luxury fashion brand. By creating digital product passports for their denim garments at the production phase of the value chain, we were able to test the app in real-life conditions and make final adjustments.
Final Results
The European Union Commission selected Chromaway as a partner for further development and collaboration. Cointelegraph article ↗
